Fruity Faces; Me, Myself, Made upDrawing its inspiration from 20th century artist Pablo Picasso, Junction Festivals primary school art project will explore portraits in the 20th century, with a view for participants to create their own portrait. While doing this, children will be introduced to a wide range of portrait styles and techniques explored by the artists in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Teachers will be invited to participate in this exploration, by looking at how Irish National figures have been depicted through portraiture, with reference to pupils’ history lessons. Costume, uniform, and the history of Dress could be another area of investigation.
The portraits will be the culmination of a three week process which will include art appreciation exploring portraiture from Van Gogh to Matisse, with a special emphasis on Picasso and his involvement with the cubist movement and their collage techniques. The activities will be devised by artist and art teacher Patricia Looby, who will design and facilitate 10 series of classes aimed mainly at 4th class children in the Clonmel area. The portraits will be collaged into large banners that will hang throughout the town centre prior and during the Junction Festival. The programme will stretch over three 90 minutes sessions starting mid-April during which hands-on collage and painting techniques will be explored. As per previous years, the response has been excellent and we have 10 classes reserved who will receive a visit from the Junction programme in the coming months. The series of three sessions will be offered at a concession price of € 10 per child which includes all materials. For more information, please contact Catherine at the catherine@junctionfestival.com
