SUMMARY:The Female Image Claimed
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of works by Jo Slade and Gerry Carew in response to John Ferrera. \n6s & 7s Gallery\, Davis Street\, Tipperary Town\, E34 VX84. \nOpening hours: Wednesday – Saturday 11am-4pm \nJo Slade is a poet\, and a multimedia artist. She lives and works in Limerick. Studied at the Limerick School of Art & Design\, The National College of Art and the University of Limerick. Jo has exhibited her paintings\, sculptures and installations widely in Ireland\, France and Italy in both solo and group shows. Her work is included in private collections in the UK\, France\, Italy and Ireland and in National Collections. Her most recent solo exhibition Nostos\, an exhibition of paintings\, sculptures & assemblages was in The Courthouse Gallery Ennisdymon Co.Clare 2020. She is the author of seven collections of poetry and two chapbooks of poems. Her new poetry collection\, O N C E\, was published by Salmon Poetry\, in March 2025. \n“When I was first introduced to the work of John Ferrera through my artist friend Gerry Cerew\, I was struck by the silence of these images of women. Though the prints are serenely beautiful the women appear to have been muted\, bound together like sisters in their quietude. Their true identities remain veiled. These print images of women have been created to be gazed at not to be engaged with in a meaningful way. My response as a predominately abstract painter\, is to use the materiality of paint to create depth and texture\, to reimagine their strength and resilience. To use colour to turn their silence into a visible presence.” – Jo Slade \nGerry Carew is an artist and art therapist and owner of At 6s & 7s Gallery in Tipperary Town. She studied at the Limerick School of Art and Design and Crawford Art College Cork. Recently retired from UHL Department of Psychiatry where she worked as senior art therapist for over 30 years Gerry believes in the value and joy of art ‘Art isn’t something separate from daily life – its woven into how we see\, feel and make sense of the world. Gerry has had a number of exhibitions in Ireland\, her most recent work was exhibited in Perugia Italy as part of the 2024 Art Therapy Biennale. The female in the landscape is a reoccurring theme in her work. \n“I was introduced to John Ferrera almost twenty years ago in his studio in Southbridge MA. I was captivated by his hand finished prints of women which appear only as heads and shoulders – serene\, stylised their elegance spoke to me of both beauty and constraint. I found myself imagining the rest of them: the curve of a waist\, the sweep of a skirt. I wanted to give them bodies\, gestures and space to breath. My work emerged as a conversation rather than a contrast to John’s images. A reclaim of what is unseen\, posture\, poise and perhaps a whisper of rebellion.” – Gerry Carew \nJohn Ferrera\, Southbridge MA\, USA\nA Journeyman Artist is how he describes himself\, John has worked for over 7o years with a variety of creative mediums\, drawing\, watercolour\, ink\, print\, pastel\, sculpture and photography. A truly prolific artist who has explored a variety of themes from nature\, the sea\, to birds and animals. Figurative\, portrait and oriental themes are a small selection of what had inspired him through his long creative life. His illustrations have been inspired by characters in the Civil War and all of Dickens characters.

SUMMARY:Cultural Exchanges: Commonality and Community
DESCRIPTION:Working with members of the local Ukrainian community and crafters\, this project with artist Annie Hogg has sought to find commonality through the prism of working with wild hedgerow plants\, focusing on plants which are familiar to both communities to explore their uses for dyeing\, folklore\, and folk medicine. \nThis exploration of our common ground resulted in dyeing threads\, which were then used as embroidery linen. The designs\, stories and final assemblage has been led by the participants\, culminating in this exhibition in the heart of the town. \nAudio pieces featuring the voices of participants and Ukrainian Folk Choir can be heard via QR codes located on Mitchell Street. \nFor more information on this installation\, please click here. \n This project is supported by the Integration Fund.

SUMMARY:Courage to Welcome - An Exhibition of Street Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Above photo by Ruairi O Caisleáin. \nCourage to Welcome – An Exhibition of Street Photographs \nCreated by volunteers and staff working with refugees in Clonmel for Refugee Week in Clonmel this street-photography exhibition explores the theme ‘Courage to Welcome’. Captured in public spaces and everyday settings\, the images were taken by members of the local volunteer group Clonmel Together\, alongside staff from a local IPAS centre and Tipperary County Council’s Local Authority Integration Team. Curated by street photographer Kevin Lim\, the work focuses on unscripted moments of connection\, presence\, and shared space. Together\, the photographs reflect how welcome is lived in small gestures\, ordinary encounters\, and the rhythms of daily life around us. \nCurator’s Note from photographer\, Kevin Lim:\n“The Courage to Welcome exhibition\, created by volunteers and staff working with refugees in Clonmel\, Tipperary\, asks something simple of its visitors: to look again.\nAt first glance\, the photographs may appear ordinary\, images of familiar objects and places\, yet each image gestures beyond itself\, holding a quieter tension: the pause before entry\, the hesitation at a threshold\, the silent question of belonging within a welcoming community.\n\nVisitors are requested to consider welcome not as an idea\, but as a series of small\, practical acts of kindness that support newcomers to the community. \nThe perspective of the photographs on show is that of the volunteer. Their photos reveal how ordinary spaces include or exclude\, how everyday objects and gestures can calm or unsettle the mind.\nThese photographs point to the quiet\, often invisible labour of welcome\, and to the courage it demands\, both from those who offer it and from those who must find the will to accept it. \nWelcome is not sentiment. It is structure\, not opinion\, but action. Not distance but crossing.\nThis exhibition reflects on what it means to hold space so others can move forward\, to build\, to support\, to help newcomers span the divide.\nThe courage to welcome is choosing to stand in the gap and make this journey possible.” \nOpening hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4.30pm

SUMMARY:Séamus Nolan Exhibition Launch: The Blackened Circle - Prototype for a Monument
DESCRIPTION:This July will see the results of a nine-month socially engaged project by Séamus Nolan in collaboration with members of the Clonmel Traveller community\, continuing STAC’s development and support of socially engaged art practices. \n The Blackened Circle is a monument to the temporary possession\, occupation\, use and enjoyment of land that has been customary for Irish Traveller communities for centuries. In the past\, circles of black ash and charred sticks are what remained to mark the campfires that were central to the gathering of nomadic communities along roadsides and networks of traditional camping grounds. The project involves working collaboratively with Traveller community members to document and share these storied sites\, recounting and sustaining the connections to the land and to the communities intersecting those places. \nIn partnership with Creative Communities\, Creative Ireland Programme\, Tipperary County Council and South Tipperary Arts Centre. \nExhibition runs until 1st August.\nExhibition opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday\, 10am-5pm

Participants will be provided with a map of potential locations. The location for paint-outs each day will be confirmed via the CJAF Plein Air WhatsApp group. Their decision in making these awards is final. A maximum of one award will be made to any artist. \nHealth and Safety\nBefore setting up to paint\, please take time to assess the potential hazards that your location may present. Please ensure that you carry and site your equipment in a safe manner for yourself and others. Do not block footpaths or exits; leave room for others to pass without stepping onto the road. Be prepared and dressed for all possible weather conditions in Ireland in July. All workshops will have a back-up indoor venue in the event that it is not possible to paint outdoors\, which may happen but most likely for part of the day only. These spaces are for the use of workshop participants only. In the event of rain or inclement weather\, it is your decision and responsibility whether you continue painting. There will be some overhead cover available in the local area\, or you may make your own ad hoc arrangements to work under cover as best you can\, e.g. doorways can be useful but always get permission from the owner where appropriate before you begin. Likewise\, if you wish to paint a pub or café interior\, please check with the manager first. Finally\, you may resort to painting from a parked car\, but that again is entirely at your own risk.Communication\nAll communications in advance of the weekend will be to/from info@junctionfestival.com \nAll communications during the weekend will be by WhatsApp only. \nInformation can also be sought at The Platform (Showgrounds Shopping Centre\, Clonmel\, Unit 12A\, opposite Regatta). \nWhatsApp groups will be set up: \n– for general messages about the weekend\n– for individual workshops – to share details and work
