SUMMARY:The Horse of Jenin by Alaa Shehada
DESCRIPTION:The Horse of Jenin\, written and performed by Palestinian actor and comedian Alaa Shehada\, tells a universal story. It is about a boy growing up in Jenin\, but like every child in the world\, he most wants to play and have fun. It is a story about the resilience that imagination brings. \nIn April 2002\, a major invasion took place in Jenin. In the aftermath\, a German artist came over for an art workshop. After four weeks\, with the help of 15 Palestinians\, he unveiled the result. He had built a horse as tall as 5 metres out of metal fragments\, debris from the bombing. They rode the horse through the city and everyone was proud of it\, people felt lifted by it. \nThe horse is an Arabic symbol of freedom\, but this horse was also a symbol of peaceful resistance. It was a symbol of resilience. Last November\, an Israeli bulldozer entered the camp and the horse was removed. \nIn this solo\, Alaa wonders: what happened to the horse? Was it arrested? Did it go to court? Was he able to defend himself? Did they put him in jail? Was the horse interrogated? And did it then tell about the day Alaa tried to ride the horse with his best friend Ahmed? \nWith this solo\, Alaa builds a new horse\, constructed from the fragments of his memories supplemented with a huge dose of humour and imagination. A theatrical symbol of resistance and imagination. DESCRIPTION:A reading of a new play from a contemporary rural voice\, about an isolated woman who has become so disassociated from her body that she believes she’s turning into a cow. \nMuck follows the journey of Maureen McLoughney\, an insecure\, isolated woman who has become so disassociated from her body she begins to believe she is turning into a cow. Having left her job at the local meat factory for a deli assistant position in a supermarket\, Maureen is feeling good as she celebrates her 35th birthday with her parents\, until a sudden outburst in retaliation to her mother emerges in the form of a cattle cry. As she searches for the reason behind this progressively frightening transformation\, she is catapulted into a series of unfamiliar social and sexual interactions\, leading her back to the killing floor at the factory\, only for Maureen to discover her true nature in an illuminating\, cathartic light. \nRoseanna Purcell is an actor and writer from Littleton\, Tipperary. \nPlease note this is a rehearsed reading. DESCRIPTION:Irish TV presenter and journalist Helen Carroll will lead the discussion around ‘Being other in rural Ireland’ with FELISPEAKS\, Maitiú Mac Cárthaigh and Jack Rogers. \nFELISPEAKS is a Nigerian-Irish visionary artist celebrated for their profound exploration of identity\, social justice\, and personal growth through poetry\, performance and theatre. As well as being featured in the Irish Leaving Cert Curriculum\, their compelling work transcends borders\, leaving an indelible mark on international literature. \nMaitiú Mac Cárthaigh is an interdisciplinary artist working across expanded print-media\, sculpture\, sound and writing. They will share creative work in progress\, exploring how these practices shape our perceptions of rural space as utopian or regressive and are influenced by our connection to the ecological. Ultimately\, asking who is allowed to exist in rural spaces\, and who benefits from greater inclusivity? \nAs a queer person and only son of a farmer\, Jack Rogers seeks to engage with concepts affecting rural communities and creates performances that draw attention to issues that continue to alienate farmers across the nation.
