Clonmel Junction Arts Festival (4th to 13th July) is delighted to announce the addition of Micky Mac (a colleague of Vincent’s at RTÉ Radio 2) to the line-up for the Vincent Hanley Summer School. Micky will join Conor McAnally and Tonie Walsh in conversation with Helen Carroll at 6pm on Sunday, 6 th July to celebrate 1980s music culture as well as look to the future and Vincent’s legacy as a broadcasting trailblazer.
Micky, who this year marks 46 years on radio with his weekly 70s show on RTÉ GOLD on Saturdays 9-10am, said:
“I am very happy to be invited to be part of Vincent Hanley Summer School – both of us joined RTÉ Radio 2 at the start of the station – I used do his stand in gigs for his morning radio shows and in later years we were both on every Saturday back-to-back for three hours. We both got on well as we were non-Dublin Jocks – he from Clonmel and me from Limerick.
“Vincent’s legacy was his confidence at bringing new sounds and irreverence to young Ireland who were shaking off the cobwebs of Showbands and Ballad Groups. He was a master of his art as a DJ both live and on the radio, and he brough music television to our sitting rooms.
“Well done Clonmel for honouring Fab Vinnie!”
Artistic Director of Clonmel Junction Arts Festival, Rebecca Lenehan, said: “We’re delighted that Micky Mac is joining the impressive line-up of speakers for our inaugural Vincent Hanley Summer School. Micky has some wonderful stories from his time at RTÉ Radio 2 with Vincent – his insights and anecdotes are a very welcome and important addition to the programme, especially in relation to the early RTÉ Radio 2 years.”
